Mr. Haider Barma, CEO of HKRITA briefed the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang on various R&D project displays and explained the technology focus areas, operation and technological roadmaps of HKRITA on 24 Oct 2006 at the Hong Kong Science Park.

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, was briefed by the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Anthony Wong, on how the Innovation and Technology Commission supports businesses in developing and adopting technology to harness their competitiveness......

The first call for funding of R&D projects was most encouraging. This resulted in 18 bids for platform research projects and one for a collaborative research project. These applications contained proposals for research in all four categories:

1. New Materials, Textiles and Apparel Products
Production of nano materials, shape memory fabric/ garments, electronic clothing, innovative garment dyeing/ finishing system, fabric surface treatment technology, sputtering technology and database of footwear materials.

2. Advanced Textile and Production Technologies

Advanced textile and garment manufacturing process technology, finer torque free cotton yarn production and electrochemical fabric pre-treatment system.

3. Innovative Design and Evaluation Technologies

Thermal functional design CAD system, fabric analysis system, colour measurement system and knowledge-based footwear system.

4. Enhanced Industrial Systems and Infrastructure
Authentication system for clothing industry, fabric management system and knowledge portal.

The Technology Committee met on 15th – 16th November 2006 and after meticulous vetting supported 10 projects with a total funding of approximate HK$35 million. 7 of the remaining 9 projects were considered to have considerable merits. The HKRITA Secretariat will discuss details with the applicants with a view to their submitting revised applications when invitations for the next tranche are invited in February/ March 2007.

“Walter” – the sweating fabric manikin for the evaluation of clothing comfort

Inspired by the thermoregulation system of the human body, “Walter”, the first thermal manikin made of mainly water and high strength breathable fabric has been developed by Prof. Jin-tu Fan from the Institute of Textiles and Clothing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. With its unique features, Walter is relatively less costly, but achieves high accuracy in objective measurements.

This technology feature outlines the background of the thermal manikin development, highlights the key features of the sweating fabric manikin-“Walter” and its recent improvements, as well as its applications in apparel product development and testing of functional clothing.
Special thanks to Prof. Jin-tu Fan and Apparelkey for their contributions of this article!

The R&D team is now up and running. Two new colleagues, Mr. Daniel Tsun and Ms. Kathy Kwan joined HKRITA as Project Manager and Project Associate respectively in Sep 2006. They will assist the R&D Director in project vetting, monitoring and assessment of R & D projects.

We are now recruiting to fill up an Executive Officer vacancy. Please visit our website or send an email to for more details.
