The Competitive Advantage of Innovation

The Innovation and Technology Symposium organised by The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 7 July 2015. The biannual symposium attracted over 400 participants who participated in a series of simulating interactive discussions on upgrading technologies...

Visit to the Wuhan Textile University

Representatives of HKRITA and research partners visited Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei in June 2015. Wuhan is a key commerce, distribution and transportation hub in central China where many rail lines, roads and expressways passing through the area. Hubei has been an important base for Chinese textile industry. A comprehensive industry system with a wide range of products such as cotton textiles, wool textiles, linen textiles, knitting, silk textiles, printing and dyeing and chemical fibre has been formed...

Bio-degradable Synthetic Fibres

Synthetic fibre has been widely applied in the textiles and clothing industry. When products made by these materials are worn out, the cost of its waste disposal is high as hazardous materials may be released during the combustion process and its solid state is not easily degradable. It will lead to a serious impact on the environment.

The oxo bio-degradable synthetic fibres developed in this project are...

The following new research projects have recently been approved with around HK$ 7.9 million in funding support:

Innovative Design and Evaluation Technologies:

Advanced Clothing Functional Design CAD Technologies (II) (RD/PT/012/14)

Asymmetric Competition Footwear for Hong Kong Olympic Fencing Team (RD/SD/001/15)

An Automatic and Detachable Fabric Defect Detection and Grading Device for Apparel Industry (RD/PR/011/14)

HKRITA has commercialised a few more technologies for industry application:

A magnetron sputtering system for roll-to-roll processing is developed in a project over two phases: Functional and Decorative Textile Products through Sputtering Technology and Development of Roll to Roll Magnetron Sputtering System for Large-size Fabric. The newly developed system can produce sophisticated metallic effects with stencil pattern designs in an environmentally friendly approach.

Development of Enterprise Sustainability using a Cloud Application in Fashion Retail is a B2B platform to deliver functions such as real-time inventory management, tracking, sales analysis management and stock alerts by using apps and cloud technologies.

Welcome on Board

We are pleased to welcome a number of new staff members to foster HKRITA's development.

Dr Leo Liao, Project Manager, is delighted to join HKRITA and says, "I shall use the knowledge gained from my PhD study in this new venture. I am excited in the fresh ideas and technologies brainstormed and developed here. I look forward to bringing innovations to the textile industry with the professional and also energetic colleagues."

Dr Lin Yinglei just joined the centre-owned project team as a Research Associate. Introducing herself she says, "I finished my PhD in the Institute of Textiles and Clothing of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before joining HKRITA, I worked in a high-performance sportswear research project funded by HKRITA. I am really pleased to work with such professional and supportive colleagues in HKRITA, as well as new friends in the textiles industry and academic field. I hope to contribute my expertise and knowledge to the industry."

Ms Fiona Ye, Research Associate, treasures all upcoming challenges and remarks that "I enjoy working with a group of passionate researchers who believe in the value and impact created from our innovative technology. I shall make good use of my design knowledge in the job. Also, I am very grateful for the support of my supervisors and colleagues."

Another research talent Ms Daphne Lau has joined HKRITA as a Project Associate. She shares with us that "I studied Chemistry and worked in a testing laboratory. In HKRITA, I am responsible for the research projects in related to textiles chemistry. The change in job nature is a great challenge to me, but I am confident that I can overcome this and will be able to make a contribution to the centre.

Techno-Xchange welcomes HKRITA members to contribute articles on latest technology developments in their companies. If your company would like to publish any new technology development or innovation, please email us the write-up with focus on the technology development, its application and benefits to the industry.
