Scientific research is often seen as some unfathomable issues inside the ivory tower that has nothing to do with the general public. In fact, our daily life is usually improved by the fruit of the research. For example, some athletes of the 2008 Hong Kong Olympic team put on sportswear from the project “High-performance Sportswear and Devices” conducted by The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel.

The research, kicked off in June 2008, is led by Prof. Li Yi and his research team from the Institute of Textiles and Clothing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University......

Energy-saving and Environmental-friendly Production System and Material: Quick Testing Technology for Toxic and Harmful Textiles and Clothing Products
4. Novel Quick Testing Sensors of Formaldehyde in Textile Fabrics and Clothing Products

Projects 3 and 4 fall under the Guangdong-Hong Kong Technology Cooperation Funding Scheme 2007, which aims to support applied R&D projects that will facilitate economic development in the Greater Pearl River Delta(PRD)region. Under this scheme, the governments of HKSAR and Guangdong invite R&D project proposals in technology areas of common interest and provide funding support to approved projects. Ms Betty So, Ms Cathy Tsang and Ms S C Ku joined HKRITA this summer. “HKRITA is a professional R & D institute, a growing organisation. It enables me to concentrate on the textiles and clothing industry’s R & D development, fostering the industry to move up to the value chain,” Betty says.

“I am glad to work in HKRITA. As a PolyU graduate and have worked here before, I feel so warm and familiar working here again,” Cathy says.
