Prevailing fabrics for common professional garment and furnishing fabrics are made of pure cotton, man-made fibers or their blends that cannot provide sufficient protection to the growing environment hazards of heat injure. Meta-aramid fiber is an excellent inherently flame-resistance fiber, but its applications are limited in products such as firefighter clothing due to low spinnability and relative high fiber cost. Therefore, this project aims at developing a cost-effective spinning system for meta-aramid blended yarns and fabrics. First, advanced spinning methods and systems will be applied and modified to develop a cost-effective spinning method. Secondly, spinning trials will be conducted to study influences of fiber proportion, yarn structure and parameters. Furthermore, weaving trials will be conducted and fabric performance will be evaluated. A testing method for yarn flammability will be developed and fabric specifications will be identified. This study is unique as it proposes a cost-effective method to develop meta-aramid blended yarns based on the understanding of influence of fiber distribution on yarn and fabric flammability. This technology will greatly promote the development of high value-added flame-resistance textiles.
