A Management Tool for Microplastics from Textile Production Process

Microplastics have become a serious problem that threatens the environment and human, because they are found in bottled water and table salt, entering the food chain, potentially endangering human health. Plastic fibers from textiles are referred to as the seventh major source of such contaminants. While most of the studies focus on of the release of microfibers during textile washing process, very few studies are aimed to evaluate and quantify their formation and release during the textile manufacturing processes. In this project, we will establish a testing method for evaluating microplastic release from different textile material (polyester/recycle polyester, nylon, and acrylic) in textile manufacturing processes such as yarn and fabric production and propose a management protocol in reducing microplastic release in the manufacturing processes.
