Developing a Pilot Scale Continuous Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment System for Textile Preparation and Finishing

Low temperature plasmas and their applications have increasingly entered various areas of industrial applications. The textile industry is a developing area for application of atmospheric pressure plasma techniques with significant growth potential. Technological advances made possible by plasma processes can reduce the costs for production by reduction in process times, improve the quality of product, generate products with new surface or bulk properties, and contribute to an environmentally sustainable work environment. In this project, a prototype of pilot scale continuous atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) treatment system will be developed as an alternative to conventional textile preparation and finishing process(es) which may involve large amount of water and chemical. The atmospheric pressure plasma treatment is a dry process with less energy and water consumption causing very little substrate damage. The continuous APP treatment thus would be an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective way as an alternative to conventional textile preparation and finishing process(es). As a result, the design feature of this prototype of pilot scale continuous APP treatment plant system will consider the following process and device factors: (1) flow rate of reaction gas; (2) flow rate of carrier gas; (3) discharge power; (4) time of plasma exposure to the fabric, etc.
