The parent project “Develop a Knowledge Based 3D Shoe Design, Patterning & Mass Customization System to strengthen the new product development capability of Hong Kong Footwear Industry” (ITP/037/12TP), completed on 31st January 2015, successfully developed a 3D shoe design system with the flattening function and the outsole function. The former can convert 3D shoe model to 2D fabric patterns in order to facilitate the automatic CNC fabric cutting; the latter is used to generate the 3D sole models from 2D sketches. This proposed project aims at extending that developed system to develop wearable electronics. Smart elderly shoes with a tracking system (RFID/GPS) will be designed by that system in order to minimize the opportunity of missing elderly suffered from Dementia. Different from the previous two PSTS projects of developing the elderly vests for TWGHs (ITT/011/12TP & ITT/024/14TP), it is believed that the proposed smart elderly shoes will provide higher security for the elderly because i) the wearers’ locations can be tracked both in the elderly centres and outdoors by means of RFID and GPS; and ii) elderly are unlikely to leave elderly centres with bare foots.
