Advanced Functional Surface Treatment Technology for Textile Materials

Research and developments in advanced technologies for textile materials and textile processing are essential for the sustainable development of the textile industry in Hong Kong, the neighboring Pearl River Delta area, and even the whole Greater China. Among the advanced technologies, advanced functional treatments for textile materials represent an area of high importance especially for the added value of the textile and garment products. This is also an area that brings most significant benefit to the industry and to consumers and thus it is one of the most active areas of research and development. In this project, based on our previous research works, we will further develop more advanced functional treatments. The areas we proposed to work on are 1) Nanotechnology based multi-functional treatments, including water-, oil-repellent, UV-blocking, anti-microbial, and formaldehyde free high strength retention wrinkle-free treatments; 2) advanced self-cleaning treatment 3) nanoparticle-based flame retardancy system for textiles. They represent the new generation of the functional treatments feasible to develop. The successful outputs from the project represent product innovations in textile science and technology and it will certainly contribute to the development of a new generation of high value added products benefiting both the textile industry and textile consumers.
