Activity-based Water Footprint Modelling of Textile Manufacturing Processes
The project objective is to develop an Activity-based Water-Footprint Modelling (AWFM) in order to understand water-footprint of each manufacturing process in the textile industry. A customized computer program will be developed to analyze and report water-footprints exclusively for dyeing, printing and finishing processes from fresh water to polluted water, but the modelling itself will also be applicable to other sectors of the textile industry.
To collect accurate data, a water-footprint data collection and monitoring system will be set up throughout the pilot factory. The gathered data will then be input to the software. Based on the findings, this AWFM can formulate specific and measurable targets with respect to water-footprint reduction, with special attention to areas where problems of water usage and pollution are most critical.
This innovative and practical approach will allow maximal flexibility and cost effectiveness in water-footprint disclosure that fits the characteristics and demand of the current trend of the textile industry.
By applying the monitoring system to machines and activities throughout the production process such as dyeing, the software can capture data and generate reports of water consumption and water intensity at the site level, the workshop level and the machine level, as well as at the production order or batch level. Customised reports can be produced at these various levels by selection of time and data.
This innovative and practical approach, together with the comprehensive measurement of water consumption will allow maximal flexibility and cost effectiveness in water-footprint disclosure that fits the characteristics and demand of the current trend of the textile industry.
