Functional Regenerated Cellulose Composite Fibers
Over the past 10 years, textiles have been the fastest growing waste stream in many countries. By recycling used clothes and textiles, such problems of pollution and the energy intensive production of new clothing could be avoided.
The recent hydrothermal separation system represents an important breakthrough for textile recycling, which not only achieves complete separation of polyester-cotton fabric blends, but also affords individual components having a good promise for further recycling/upcycling needs. The main idea of this project is to make use of this recovered cellulose component for developing a new type of reinforced and functional regenerated fibers. The method used would be based on a combination of emerging nanocomposite techniques into a wet spinning process. Specifically, the main objectives of the work are to:
1. prepare regenerated fiber from the cellulose residue of the hydrothermal treatment.
2. enhance the regenerated fiber by nanocellulose, UV-blocking, and infrared (IR) emissivity additives.
3. analyze the composition and its relationships to properties of the fibers.
4. study the fabrication process and find out the optimized process parameters, materials, conditions so as to obtain best possible required properties.
