Development of an Intelligent Fur Processing System Based on Advanced Optical and Automation Technologies
Fur manufacturing involves a fur stretching process to straighten and enlarge the fur. The conventional process of fur stretching is a kind of labor intensive production methodology to stretch the fur manually with the help of hammer and nail. Because of unreliable human factor and being afraid of overstretching, the conventional process is hard to achieve an optimized stretching result to obtain a maximized size of fur. Moreover, the conventional method involves repeated work of nailing, which is inefficient and requires skillful workers. Hong Kong fur industry becomes more challenging due to the increasing cost and lack of skillful labor. Manufacturers are looking for a technology to replace the traditional process and help enhancing their competitiveness.
This project aims to develop automation technology for fur industry. It includes the development and integration of moisturizing, vision inspection, knowledge based stretching, and drying sub-systems. These automation technologies will form an intelligent fur processing system in order to assist fur industry to enhance the utilization rate of raw material, shorten manufacturing time, enhance product quality, and finally increase the competitiveness.
