Intelligent Wearable System for Impact Safety Protection and Real-Time Monitoring
This project develops an intelligent wearable system applicable as hip protectors to protect the elderly from injury induced from falling or stumbling. The hip protectors consist of protective tubes and real-time monitoring sensors to alert the caretakers in case of accident. It aims to make the wearer to feel more comfortable when wearing hip protectors so as to encourage the elderly to put on hip protectors.
What are the consequences of elderly suffering from falling?
Falling is common among the elderly and it can induce serious consequences, such as fractures. Wearing hip protectors with real-time monitoring function can ensure the safety and well-being of the elderly and better support the caretakers.
The system can be applied to fabrics as hip protectors for the elderly. It offers both protective and monitoring functions that support both the elderly and the caretakers.
This intelligent wearable system offers effective impact resistance and enhances comfort in wearing. It includes protective tubes filled with shear thickening fluid, which is a material that becomes solid when it experiences shear force, such as during falling or tripping. Inside the tube, there is a triboelectric nanogenerator that converts the impact generated from falling into signal, which will be sent to smartphone APPs immediately to notify caretakers if the wearer is in dangerous.
