An Empirical Study of Laser-based Finishing for Textile Materials

This project concerns with the effect of laser-based finishing treatment on the aesthetic performance and wear characteristics of textile materials. Laser technology is one of the physical processes promising to be applied for textile material surface treatment. Being a dry process, the laser treatment can be used as an environmentally friendly method to impart faded and torn look in the fabric with the advantages of, for example, reduction of water and chemical consumption and increased process flexibility. On the other hand, with the systematic control of the surface profile of laser interaction on the fabric surface, traditional mechanical finishing effects imparted by sueding, emerizing and shearing might be achieved. Therefore, with variation of different laser and material operation parameters, the final effect on the fabric surface will be different.
