Trial: Sensing Insole for Real Time Landing Pattern Detection in Trail Runners
The parent project (ITP/085/15TI) successfully validated a newly developed sensing insole to provide real time biofeedback of landing pattern for distance runners and this novel invention, which has earned two major awards at the International Exhibition of Inventions 2017, is expected to prevent running related overuse injuries and enhance the current delivery model of rehabilitation. The algorithm has been verified with sophisticated laboratory equipment when distance runners are running on flat, inclined, and declined surfaces. In order to maximize participants' comfort, the parent project also optimized the insole design by 3D printing prototyping. In addition, we have developed a smartphone app which connects with the sensing insole. Runners are then able to receive audio feedback while they are enjoying music during running. In the wear trial of the parent project, 10 distance runners who are used to run on flat surface (tracks or promenades) used the sensing insoles for a footstrike pattern modification program. All project deliverables of the parent project have been achieved, including the newly established and validated algorithm, 10 pairs of sensing insole prototypes and a technical manual.
