Functional and Decorative Textile Products through Sputtering Technology

The proposed project is to apply sputtering technology with alloys of metals to different types of textile fabrics and to systematically investigate the potentials of textile design application in manufacturing. A series of treatments will be undertaken, including pre-treatment, sputtering and post-treatment. The aesthetic and functional properties of the coated textiles will be analysed. The following three major objectives will be achieved: (1) To establish an approach in metallising textile design for functional textile products using optimising sputtering technology; (2) To examine the properties of metallised textiles and to evaluate such performance against the requirements of international specifications; and (3) To develop innovative metallised textile design products for high-end garments and accessories. A diverse model will be established for original textile design. A series of textile products with unique appearances and special functional properties will be achieved. The proposed research will contribute significantly to the development for a new type of innovative textile product. They will have a high value, elaborate appearance with broad applications.
