Sustainable Design of an Innovative Nonwoven-Yarn Spinning System

This project aims to develop an innovative and sustainable yarn spinning system using nonwoven materials. This approach solves the problems of excess ends-down and breakages of ultra-short fibres induced by the traditional yarn spinning methods. Additionally, this method could also be flexible for making yarns with extensive choices of fibres such as the high value-added natural-based fibres. This innovation will lead to a breakthrough in realizing the manufacturing of yarns without limitations on the fibre length and raw materials.

This nonwoven-yarn spinning system could compensate both technical cons during yarn spinning whereas fabrication of functional textiles with acceptable comfort and appearance could be industrialized. It could also be a recycling mean of the textile wastes by converting them into yarns. This is believed to be a win-win situation for both industrialization and greening the community in an easy-to-implement and cost-effective way. Meanwhile, the proposed system could also increase the core competitive advantages of Hong Kong’s textile industry in the global market via the textile cycling creative economy.

Application

Producing yarn using nonwoven materials. These nonwoven yarns can be made from a various source of raw materials, residue fibre from spinning, and recycled textile materials.

Industry Benefit
  • An innovative spinning system of yarn using nonwoven material, with an extensive choice of fibre such as high value-added natural-based fibre for a large variety of products.
  • Easy to implement and cost-effective for industrialisation.
  • A sustainable production process as ultra-short fibres can be used; contributing to a circular textile industry.

Technological Breakthrough

This approach solves the problems of excess ends-down and breakages of ultra-short fibres induced by the traditional yarn spinning methods.
