Trial: Thermal Comfort, Light Weight and Recyclable Bedding Products Made from Air Splitting Technology

This project develops ultrafine fibre bedding products with excellent thermal and comfort properties. These ultrafine fibre nonwoven fabrics are produced using a novel air splitting technology.

Ultrafine fibres have great advantages such as extraordinary surface to volume ratio, high permeability, high porosity and extreme small pore size, and have been successfully applied for nonwoven products. Traditionally, the production of ultrafine fibres such as electrospun and melt blown processes suffer from low production rate, high energy consumption, high manufacturing cost and even toxic waste disposal. The ultrafine fibre bedding products in this project are produced using a novel prototype machine equipped with the advanced air splitting technology, which consumes less energy, enjoys higher production rate, and has simpler equipment and maintenance than existing production method.

Application

The bedding product prototypes include duvet, duvet covers, pillow covers, and bedding sheets and will be used in trial to study thermal comfort during sleeping

Industry Benefit

Producing ultrafine fibre bedding products with a less energy-consuming method using air splitting technology while maintaining its thermal and comfort properties. The nonwoven bedding products are recyclable, producing less waste and thus being environmental-friendly.

Technological Breakthrough

With enhanced spinning process, ultrafine fibre nonwoven fabric with appropriate width and excellent touching for bedding product can be produced
