Trial: Wearable Electronic for Better Quality Community Care of the Elderly Phase I

This prototype project aims to develop a comfortable outer apparel with RFID tracking system for Alzheimer’s patient by a coalition of 3 R&D Centres: HKRITA, ASTRI & LSCM. This project will develop a tracking system which prevents Alzheimer’s patient from escaping from their Elderly Centre at cost affordable by the Elderly Centres and patients’ relative who are mainly coming from lower income class.

During the project time, the project would be launched into two day-care elderly centers of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. The no. of service targets were around 140 elders. In this project, HKRITA would develop one set of comfortable apparel made of Nu-Torque cotton yarn for accomplishing the RFID devices.

Application

If the elderly resident is wearing the outer apparel and then leaves the centre without warning, the RFID reader will ring the alarm and the staff members can find them as soon as possible. The built-in GPS and iBeacon tracking system also help caretakers easily manage the elderly whereabouts wherever they are during outdoor activities.
