Athletes’ performance and achievement in professional sports are closely related to the level of science and technology. Real-time monitoring of human physiological and mechanical signals is necessary to quantify the sport process and evaluate the training effect. The aim of this project is to develop an intelligent monitoring system incorporated with in-situ flexible sensors for measurement of physiological and mechanical signals in the sport of weightlifting.

The limb-gauge technology helps athletes monitor their physiological / mechanical status in professional sports, assists coaches to design and evaluates training methods, and provides an effective method to sports scientists to better understand and study human biomechanics. The outcome of the project is to build a unique database of relevant athletes will inspire new findings in human biomechanics and ergonomics.

The successful adoption of the technology and products will broaden the traditional textiles, sports devices and electronics industry with good prospect to enter new markets and develop new products, which may increase the competitive power of companies in the market, and thus enhance the sports level and economic development in HKSAR.

Application

The limb-gauge monitoring system incorporated with fabric strain sensor arrays helps weightlifting athletes to monitor their physiological/mechanical status, track and record the range of motion at weightlifting training. It also assists coaches to design and evaluate training program by the real time curves of muscle perimeter change exported from the system. Furthermore, athletes and people in gym can also evaluate their training or exercise effect with the system.

Technological Breakthrough

Limb-gauge monitoring system is a dynamic measurement system, which is different from the traditional measurement system that can only measure the limb perimeter in the static status. The new system uses an array of fabric strain sensors, a novel textile-electronic packaging technology, stretchable fabric conductive connections and minimized wireless transmission technology. It can monitor, display, store and analyze the perimeter changes of user muscles in the training process.
